Year 5 : Simulation
Introduction
The simulation training day is provided by Barts Health Simulation Centre and serves as preparation for your future F1 role and has the following aims:
• Consolidate acute care skills
• Translate theoretical knowledge into practical transferable skills
• Practice managing medical emergencies through simulation
• Introduce the concept of crisis resource management
Sessions
Station 1: Intravenous Infusions
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for unwrapping & checking products to be used.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for piercing fluid bag.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for running through fluid.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for eliminating air.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for connection & securing to cannula.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for use of pressure bag.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for adding drugs to fluid & use of additive labels.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for delivering more than 1 infusion via same cannula (compatibility, pH)
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for selection of correct giving set.
Station 2: Oxygen
Simulated Scenarios
- Use a structured approach.
- Conduct a patient history & examination.
- Institute appropriate monitoring.
- Review available information.
- Formulate a working diagnosis.
- Request appropriate investigations.
- Prescribe medications accurately & safely.
- Instigate immediate management.
- Demonstrate effective team working & communication.
- Call for appropriate senior help.
- Present an accurate handover to senior staff.
- Reassess & evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.
- Promote infection control & patient safety.
- Manage emergency situations effectively & safely.
- Use recognised protocols & guidelines where appropriate.
Station 3: Drugs
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for checking drug (chart, wrist band, allergies).
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for drug preparation.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for selection of correct type & volume of diluent (displacement volumes).
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for drug administration.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for safe disposal of sharps & waste.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for completion of drug chart.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for drug compatibility.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for ensuring patient comfort & safety.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for use of mini-jets.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for safe handling of glass ampoules.
